Strategies for Success - Planning Great Courses!

This course is divided into two key sections:

  • Exploring a Practical Pedagogy
  • Effective Tools Use to Promote Teaching & Learning

Section 1: Exploring a Practical Pedagogy

This section encourages staff to:

  • Deconstruct an existing element/module of a course into its component parts (lectures, seminars, discussion, testing, etc)
  • Reflect on this deconstruction and relate it to a model of the learning process
  • Select WebCT functionality to enable a reconstruction, paying particular attention to the ways in which WebCT tools support good teaching principles
  • Reconstruct the element/module in WebCT, synthesising all previous steps

Section 2: Effective Tools Use to Promote Teaching & Learning

This section provides new staff with a thorough overview of the WebCT environment. Staff will gain an awareness of key WebCT functionality and see the impact of student activity on assessment, tracking and administrative tools. Staff will use key Collaborative Tools to explore strategies for engaging an online learner.

Structure, Function, Content - Building Great Courses!

How to 'assemble' and 're-assemble' WebCT courses.

Promotes the concept that building an online course is not all about html creation, but involves enabling online interaction, research and the facilitation of learning. The course also explains how existing non-html resources such as PowerPoint, Word or PDF files can be efficiently incorporated into WebCT courses.

Progresses to look at and practise building courses with prepared HTML files, using the Content Module and Single Page tools and the impact on tracking of content release choices.

Length: 1 day
Maximum group size: 12
Prerequisites: Course members should have a thorough understanding of the concepts of files, folders, upload, download, zip & unzip and simple file management. A high degree of general web awareness is essential.

Outcomes:
Course members will be able to
• build WebCT courses
• build WebCT course templates
• incorporate existing materials into WebCT courses

for online and offline assessment tracking. Looks at how student tracking data is derived, accessed and downloaded.

Length: 1 day
Maximum group size: 12
Prerequisites: Course members should have a reasonable understanding of WebCT. They should have completed either of courses S001 or S002, or have gained familiarity with WebCT previously.

Outcomes:
Course members will be able to
• create and release self tests
• create and release assessments
• manage the WebCT assignments drop box tool
• use the course database for online and offline assessment tracking

WebCT Server Administration and Template Build

For selected ILT staff, server administrator, and student database administrator. This will cover student account creation issues and server backup and support requirements.

This is a fairly informal ‘round a table’ session where you can identify issues and we can propose potential solutions.

The second half of the day is spent helping you build a WebCT Template/s for your institution.

Length: 1 day
Maximum group size: 12

WebCT Workshops

Extra workshop days can be added to any of the above courses. Your staff will bring along actual course materials and are helped through the course building process in a workshop situation. (We advise a maximum of 6 Delegates). We find that these are particularly effective if provided approximately 3 – 4 weeks after the main training and after the staff have commenced their actual course building.

Workshops may be ‘themed’ to provide specific support to staff at different phases of course development. For example, a Content Support theme may be planned to help develop and troubleshoot eLearning content development.

Length: one or more days
Maximum group size: 12
